What is a Day-in-the-Life Family photo Session?

What is day-in-the-life family photography?

Picture a single morning with your family. The little things, the routine, the mundane. What parts do you want to remember forever?

Day-in-the-life sessions (sometimes referred to as long-form sessions), are the perfect way to capture the little things that would probably go unnoticed or completely missed in a standard family photo session. These sessions are often 8 full hours long, but I like to cap them at 4, which still gives us ample time to document a full morning or late afternoon with your family. These sessions are approached with a documentary style that captures the daily routine: making breakfast together, snuggled in bed reading, feeding the fish, playing in the yard. It's all part of your story, and to me, it’s the most meaningful.

Day-in-the-life sessions get us closer to documenting the real memories you’re already making. It's a lot less about posing and more about being present with your family and capturing what life is really like.

Real life is messy. That’s why it’s beautiful! In this age where we're now constantly questioning what is and isn't made with AI, I'm craving photography that shows more of what is undeniably real.

A morning on film

My approach to long-form family sessions

  • Start at home

We start at home and either follow your regular daily routine or go out on a family outing. Being in Olympia, WA gives us ample opportunities to go on gorgeous scenic adventures together, but sometimes the best adventure is to your child’s favorite playground and then back home for snack time.

  • Film and digital

My long form sessions feature both film and digital imagery. Shooting with film naturally slows our pace, allowing us (or perhaps forcing us) to breathe and relax (even if the kids are bouncing off the walls). It also helps us to let go of perfection and embrace the unpredictable (and isn't that what parenting is about)?

  • Heirloom Albums

The best memories from these sessions are then printed in your custom heirloom album, because there’s nothing better than the nostalgia of looking through a stack of beloved photo albums over the years.
